Shaping technology together, supporting young people and being able to play a part in their future are things that are very important to me.
By studying Technology at our university, you can gain the qualifications required to become a teacher of Technology at lower secondary level or to teach science and technology in primary schools, with a focus on Technology.
This subject is suitable for anyone with an interest in technical issues who wishes to carry out practical projects with pupils. Technology is a subject in short supply in general studies at primary schools. However, the compulsory-option subject of Technology also offers good employment prospects at secondary schools, comprehensive schools, technical secondary schools and lower secondary schools, as the subject’s vocational preparation aspect is highly significant against the background of the skills shortage in the skilled trades and industry. The chances of securing a place at university are very high!
Some of our students previously attended a technical grammar school, chose the subject ‘Natural Sciences and Technology’ (NwT) at grammar school, or successfully completed an apprenticeship – for example, as a joiner, electronics technician or technical product designer – whilst others have even dropped out of an engineering degree programme. The skills they have acquired there certainly make some modules easier, but they are by no means a prerequisite for success in the Technology degree programme. We also have a number of students who have never even studied Technology as a school subject!

We offer the subject of Technical Education as part of teacher training programmes for primary and lower secondary schools. In primary schools, technology is integrated into general studies; in secondary schools, it is taught as a compulsory elective subject.

As a student, you will receive a comprehensive education from us, covering subject-specific pedagogy, practical application and academic theory. There is a strong integration of theory and practice. In terms of content, you will, for example, explore technology-driven fields such as building and housing, production and work, transport and traffic, information and communication, and supply and waste management. Methodologically, you will work on tasks such as manufacturing or design, the control, measurement and regulation of systems, or interdisciplinary projects.
The open workshop period is a distinctive feature of the course; here, all students on the Technical Education programme have the opportunity (once they have completed their machine-work certificate) to design, produce and evaluate their own creations, such as lamps, bedside tables and chairs.
