Department of Empirical Educational Research

at the Faculty of Humanities

At the Department of Empirical Educational Research, we examine educational processes from the disciplinary perspectives of sociology, educational science, and educational psychology. What unites us is an analytical and empirical approach to educational processes and education systems: a shared commitment to generating theory-driven research insights based on both quantitative and qualitative data.

Professorships

The Department of Empirical Educational Research comprises three professorships that offer distinct yet complementary perspectives on educational processes: the Junior Professorship of Research Methods in Educational Sciences, the Professorship of Empirical Research on Teaching and Schools, and the Professorship of Sociology of Education. Together, they focus on the empirical analysis of learning, teaching, education systems, and the social conditions that shape education.

Members of the department primarily teach courses in the educational sciences modules of teacher education programmes. They also contribute courses to several non-teacher education programmes, including Childhood Education, Biodiversity and Ecological Education, Migration, Education and Democracy, Educational Gerontology, and Adult Education.

At the Junior Professorship of Research Methods in Educational Sciences, we study learner motivation and ways to foster it. In this context, we develop and evaluate motivational interventions for school and higher education settings. We are particularly interested in the individualized design and implementation of these interventions.

Cora Parrisius

At the Professorship of Empirical Research on Teaching and Schools, we investigate evidence-informed approaches to teaching and school development, with a particular focus on data- and research-informed practice, technology-enhanced formative assessment, and science communication in teacher education.

Samuel Merk

At the Professorship of Sociology of Education, we study the interplay between society and education. We examine how social conditions and societal inequalities affect access to education and educational opportunities. Conversely, we investigate how educational processes shape societies and their individual members. Our main research areas are educational inequalities, higher education research, mental health, and experimental methods.

Advisory and Support Services

  • Research Workshops

Do you need an introduction to common empirical research methods and approaches to analysing collected data? The Department of Empirical Educational Research offers workshops on various aspects of the empirical research process.

These workshops introduce key methodological principles and provide hands-on insights into core procedures. They also create space for discussion and guidance throughout the research process. Participants then apply what they have learned independently to their own research questions and data.

  • Methodological Consultation

Do you have questions about empirical research methods or the analysis of your data? We offer individual consultations on key methodological aspects of your thesis—from developing an appropriate research design and collecting data to analysing your results.

Our methodological consultation service addresses questions that general introductions and academic literature cannot fully resolve. We support you in clarifying your specific questions, making appropriate methodological decisions, and developing your own solutions.
