Academic career paths
Our university offers you a wide range of personalised career paths in academia. Whether it’s a PhD through training posts, as part of a scholarship or in externally funded projects, a tenure-track professorship or a habilitation – the academic career development of researchers at every stage of their careers is a key priority for our university.
Academic Staff Development
In collaboration with other departments within the university, staff development initiatives for the various academic target groups are continuously being refined. Academic staff development is structurally housed within the Vice-Rectorate for Research and Early-Career Support. The existing Academic Staff Development Strategy of the Karlsruhe University of Education was drawn up in cooperation with all relevant departments and stakeholder groups and adopted by the Senate in December 2018.

PhD
We offer early-career researchers the opportunity to pursue a doctoral degree in the relevant disciplines. Upon completion of your research thesis (dissertation) and an oral examination (Rigorosum or defence), you may be awarded the degree of Doctor of Education (Dr. paed.) or Doctor of Philosophy (Dr. phil.).
-
Tenure-track, junior professorship and habilitation
Since its introduction in Germany in 2002, the junior professorship has developed into an innovative career path for early-career academics. The junior professorship offers young academics the opportunity to conduct independent research and teach at an early stage in their careers, and can serve as an alternative to the traditional habilitation process.

Lectureship
Our university is authorised to grant the right to teach (venia legendi) in a specific academic subject or field following a successful habilitation. This conferral entails the right to use the title ‘Privatdozent:in’. The holder is appointed to teach the subject in question on an unpaid basis.
Five good reasons why you’ll enjoy our university as a place of research:
- Research profile in educational sciences: We offer you a specialist environment suited to topics such as teacher training, curriculum development, digitalisation, education for democracy, health, sustainability and educational research. Your research findings can be incorporated relatively directly into educational practice.
- Interdisciplinary work: Educational questions can rarely be answered from just one disciplinary perspective. Working at our university facilitates collaboration between educational sciences, the natural and social sciences, subject-specific didactics, psychology, social sciences and other disciplines such as economics or politics
- Manageable structures and personal collaboration: Compared to large universities, our smaller university fosters direct interaction with professors, project teams and colleagues. This can be particularly helpful at the start of your academic career.
- Social relevance: Research into education, schools and teacher training is of great public importance. If you wish to pursue academic work whilst also contributing to concrete improvements in the education system, you will find the ideal environment here.
- Karlsruhe as a centre of scholarship: The city offers a vibrant network of universities, research institutions and educational partners. This can lead to additional contacts, collaborations and interdisciplinary projects.
