Short-term mobility programmes
The International Summer Schools at our university are short, interdisciplinary programmes designed to facilitate international exchange between students from our university and our partner institutions. These programmes are open to both Bachelor’s and Master’s students who are interested in current topics relating to future-oriented education. Building on the concept of Global Citizenship Education, they focus on cross-cutting issues relating to topics such as social justice, multilingualism, democracy, decoloniality, digitalisation and sustainability.
Organisation and structure
Our Summer Schools are usually organised as blended formats, combining an online phase with a full-time programme lasting approximately one week at our university:
- a collaborative online phase with access to a shared, interactive learning platform and course materials
- on-campus programme at Karlsruhe University of Education, featuring lectures, workshops, courses, school visits and excursions
- group project with a final presentation
- welcome event and cultural programme
Students from our partner universities can usually earn 3 ECTS credits for participating in our Summer Schools.
Topics and content
In a globalised world, a critical engagement with current societal challenges – such as social justice, digital transformation, environmental crises, colonial legacies and power structures in the production and transmission of knowledge – is becoming increasingly important, particularly for future education professionals and teachers. Building on the concept of Global Citizenship Education and our university’s profile fields, our Summer Schools take an interdisciplinary approach to these cross-cutting themes and explore how educational processes can be designed to be inclusive, sensitive to diversity and critical of discrimination.
Thematic focuses of previous and planned Summer Schools include, for example:
- Democracy – Language – Participation
- Global Teaching in a Digital World
- STEM in a Culture of Sustainability
Current calls for applications and programmes will be published on this page as they become available. The next programme is expected to take place in October 2027 as part of the international ‘Global Teaching’ conference.
