Johanna Unewisse, M. Sc.

I am an academic staff member in the Sociology Working Group at the Institute for Empirical Educational Research and a project member of the LINEup project (Longitudinal Data for Inequalities in Education).

As part of my doctoral studies, I investigate differences in digital competencies between students with and without a migration background. In particular, I focus on the factors contributing to these differences, as well as the heterogeneity within the migrant group. The core questions of my research include: What mechanisms explain the immigrant gap in digital competencies? Are there differences in digital competency levels within this group? To answer these questions, I employ quantitative research methods. My research aims to better understand the causes of the digital divide and to promote equal opportunities in education.

In 2024, I completed the interdisciplinary Research Master's program in "Migration, Ethnic Relations and Multiculturalism" at Utrecht University. The program provided in-depth knowledge of migration, integration, societal diversity, and ethnic relations, as well as advanced training in quantitative research methods and statistical data analysis.

Research Projects

Staff Member of the EU-Horizon-Project LINEup (Longitudinal Data for Inequalities in Education)

The project aims to identify success factors for high-quality education for all. The project will map, analyses, and summarises existing longitudinal data from 31 European countries to trace the development of educational inequalities throughout students' school careers. This quantitative mapping will be complemented by qualitative research in the project countries to collect primary data on the impact of potential measures to reduce inequalities. The focus will be on gaining a better understanding of how schools can reduce inequalities in the short, medium, and long term. More information can be found here.
