11:00 am to 12:00 pm: Workshops and a talk
Workshop: H5P and AI – designing interactive learning resources
This workshop will introduce interactive exercises (such as multiple-choice quizzes and interactive explanatory videos) that can be created easily and free of charge using H5P and other tools such as ZUM Apps. Participants will learn about various exercise formats, have the opportunity to try out the exercises for themselves, and engage in critical discussion of their use in teaching and examinations. As part of an online presentation, H5P founder Svein Tore With will demonstrate how teachers can design interactive courses using AI that is integrated directly into H5P.
Workshop: Gamification
Gamification – the application of game principles and elements to non-game contexts – is recognised as a means of boosting motivation in businesses and in school education. This article examines the fundamentals and effective elements of motivation-boosting, as well as the pitfalls of supposedly motivational reward systems in digital media. The focus shifts from the outward appearance of ‘gamy’ scenarios and media to the concept of the human being within gamification in a digital culture.
Simon Maria Hassemer, born in 1983 in the Eifel region, studied German and History in Freiburg im Breisgau and Kraków. In 2014, he was awarded a PhD for his thesis on the ‘Middle Ages of popular culture’, in which he also theorised the medium of video games. For seven years, he taught at a technical grammar school in Rastatt. Since 2019, Simon Hassemer has been based at the Centre for School Quality and Teacher Training in Stuttgart, where, as a consultant for the umbrella brand ‘3D erleben’, he is responsible for the topics of Scrum, making and gamification.
Lecture: Digital Dimensions of Textuality
With a view to the development and use of comprehensive literacy skills, digital reading and writing are of particular importance, as digital reading and writing processes not only differ significantly from analogue ones, but digitalisation has also given rise to new media formats for reading and writing. The presentation will introduce and discuss evidence-based research findings and examples of best practice, which, amongst other things, explore the changes brought about by digitalisation and AI in reading and writing processes, and how digital tools and resources can be implemented effectively in subject-specific teaching.

Workshop: A modern approach to assessment – How can the iPad help with its implementation?
In this workshop, you will first be introduced to the concept of a modern assessment culture. Examples from school practice and university teaching will then be presented. Towards the end, participants will have the opportunity to try out the apps Greenscreen by Doink, Book Creator and Keynote in a hands-on way and make their first attempts at creating explanatory videos and e-books.
12:00–12:45: Showroom
Showroom: Virtual rooms, 360° tours, Innovation Space, freehand drawing, Actionbound, digital learning pathways, interactive exercises. Take a look at various best practice examples in our showroom!
We are presenting the results of the university’s BOdigi project. The main aim of the project is to promote digital skills among teacher training students. To achieve this objective, virtual spaces for career guidance were designed in collaboration with the students, amongst other things. What these spaces might look like, the design options available and how they were implemented in the seminar can be demonstrated and discussed as part of the showroom.
360° tours can be used in a variety of ways to complement teaching. For example, to prepare for a trip to the woods, to provide access to hard-to-reach places, or to develop realistic (decision-making) scenarios to which abstract content can be applied. On site, various 360° tours invite you to try out these scenarios.
We’ll also be presenting various plugins that have been successfully installed on our Moodle instance, the Innovationspace. These plugins are designed to make your teaching methods more interactive and varied. Furthermore, you’ll gain insights into how you can implement formative and summative assessments in Moodle with minimal effort. Your feedback is important to us! We’re interested in any features you might still be missing or suggestions for improvement, as the Innovationspace is constantly being developed and even expanded to include custom applications. One example of this is the freehand drawing tool developed by Mr Varney during his training period.
Digital scavenger hunts offer a way to enrich on-site learning with additional content, tasks and gamification elements. This helps to promote the learning process and boost learners’ motivation. In the showroom, you’ll find a digital scavenger hunt set up to help you familiarise yourself with the various functions.
Take a look at various best-practice examples of the use of interactive exercises in higher education and school settings. Interactive exercises are short tasks (such as crosswords, fill-in-the-blank exercises and multiple-choice quizzes) that learners can complete and mark themselves. These can be used to learn new content or to test what has already been learnt. These exercises are provided by providers such as ‘H5P’, ‘ZUMApps’ or ‘Learningapps’.
