IFID Conference 2024

In 2024, the Institute for Islamic Theology and Religious Education at the Karlsruhe University of Education, in collaboration with the Academy for Islam in Science and Society (AIWG) at Goethe University Frankfurt and with funding from the BMBF, organised a symposium entitled “Islamic Subject Didactics in Discourse (IFID): The Practical Applicability of Recent Approaches to Islamic Religious Education in German-speaking Countries” → Conference report.

Islamic religious education is a young discipline in Germany. Whilst the initial focus was on fundamental issues such as the necessity of Islamic religious education and the legal framework, there has been a growing interest in subject-specific didactic research in recent years.

Objective

The main aim of the conference was to critically examine existing approaches, discuss new methods and bring topics that have received little attention to date into the spotlight. Particular emphasis was placed on practical solutions to current challenges in the teaching of Islam. The exchange between academic researchers, theologians and teachers helped to link theoretical concepts with practical experience.

In the short term, the conference provided an opportunity to reflect on existing approaches, discuss topics that had previously received little attention and provide impetus for a contemporary didactic framework for Islamic religious education. In the long term, the aim was to integrate new insights into religious education processes and to promote the sustainable development of the participating higher education institutions. Interfaith perspectives were also taken into account in order to contribute to an inclusive educational environment.

Key questions

The academic experts will present their approaches to the various subject areas using specific examples. Contributions from theological and academic disciplines are intended to answer key questions, such as:

  • How can young Muslims deal with issues of Islamic jurisprudence, ethics, mysticism, doctrine, etc. in the current context?
  • Are there specific questions within these areas that are of particular significance? Which topics are especially relevant within these fields?
  • How can these topics be examined from different perspectives and analysed from a multi-perspectival approach?
  • Which different perspectives and approaches/methods are significant in the current European context?
  • Which indicators and implications are relevant?
  • How can specific methodological approaches be developed in these subject areas, whilst also taking into account the school as a learning environment and the various age groups?
