In (Con-)Tact Conference 2024
On 22 and 23 March 2024, an international conference entitled ‘In (Con-)Tact – Connecting Generations through Music’ will take place at the Catholic University of Applied Sciences in Munich, in collaboration with the Karlsruhe University of Education and the Mozarteum University in Salzburg.
Overview
Demographic change, ageism and changing lifestyles increase the risk that cultural differences between the generations will grow and that social cohesion will erode. Intergenerational music projects, particularly those with professional support, promote exchange between the generations, strengthen intergenerational relationships and support cultural participation across the generations. In the long term, this contributes to a positive perception between different age groups. The social relevance of such projects is emphasised, as they foster positive social interactions.
Music geragogy programmes in care homes for the elderly and other musical initiatives bring people of different ages together, inspiring, motivating and enriching them, but they can also present challenges and give rise to conflicts. The diversity of intergenerational formats offers numerous points of connection for practice and research across various music-related disciplines, such as music geragogy, instrumental and vocal pedagogy, elementary music education, choral conducting, church music and music education.
The conference ‘In(Con)Tact – Connecting Generations through Music’ builds on the 2022 ‘Future Workshop: Intergenerational Singing and Music-Making’ held at the University of Vechta. This workshop identified needs in music-related work across generations. The 2024 conference will facilitate an in-depth examination and further elaboration of aspects intended for integration into academic and professional practice. It will also provide a forum for the exchange of academic findings and practical experiences, with a view to fostering networking and providing inspiration for participants’ own work.
The findings will be published in a conference proceedings volume.
