WiN.BO Conference 2024
The 2024 Annual Conference of the Scientific Network for Career Guidance (WiN.BO) will focus on the current state of research, the potential and the limitations of evidence-based career guidance. Participants from the fields of research and practice will have the opportunity to present the current state of research as well as findings from recent projects or studies on career guidance.
The conference will take place from 13:00 on 23 September 2024 to 13:00 on 24 September 2024 here at the Karlsruhe University of Education and is free of charge.
The 2024 WiN.BO Prize will also be awarded during the conference.
In the debate surrounding the effectiveness of career guidance measures, empirical findings from subject-specific didactics and educational research are becoming increasingly important for the design of these educational programmes. With evidence-based career guidance, the focus is on the quality of teaching and learning processes, drawing on established empirical evidence. The term ‘evidence-based’ refers to career guidance that takes scientific findings into account when planning and implementing support measures for the transition from school to work. The aim is to facilitate the best possible, effective support and to integrate the growing fields of career guidance and scientific research with regard to research into effectiveness.
"WiN.BO meets CAREER LEAD"
Our conference takes on an international dimension through the involvement of CAREER LEAD. CAREER LEAD is a newly established Europe-wide research network focusing on career guidance in general education schools, which brings together research and expertise, thereby forming the basis for cross-border research activities. At the same time, the aim is to promote mutual learning in educational practice across European countries. A further aim of the network is to connect young researchers internationally and to support their exchange of ideas on current training and research projects. To this end, the Young Researcher Forum has been established. This will take the form of a hybrid event as part of the conference.
Target audience
The symposium is aimed at academics and practitioners who work in the field of career guidance or conduct research in this area. This includes:
- Academics in the field of career guidance and those involved in teacher training or professional development.
- Practitioners in the field of career guidance, including those from schools, professional bodies, government departments, the education policy sector and businesses.
Other target groups are also welcome, such as students.
Key thematic areas
Possible research questions or thematic starting points, which may adopt both a theoretical-conceptual and an empirical approach, are based, amongst other things, on the following areas:
- Evidence-based models and approaches in career guidance.
- Findings from projects or empirical studies on evidence-based career guidance, which also provide guidance for the design of career guidance.
- Development studies based on design-based research, evaluations or quality assurance, which systematically address recommendations for the objectives, content, methods and media of career guidance.
- Partnerships and collaboration in the context of evidence-based career guidance.
- Practical projects and best practices devised on the basis of findings from empirical research into career guidance, digital education and educational sciences.
- Evidence-based teaching diagnostics and the potential and limitations of collecting data on teaching in school education.
- Tools for assessing career development.
- Concepts and projects for the evidence-based training of those involved in career guidance.
Individual contributions may focus on other areas as well.

About WiN.BO
The importance of pooling research findings in the field of career guidance prompted interested academics to set up a joint network in 2014. The aim is to foster the development of a shared interdisciplinary academic culture, which is established not only through relevant publications but also via conferences, ongoing research collaborations and inter-university research projects. This is intended to contribute to strengthening the subject within the academic community. This involves increasing the acceptance of career guidance research, developing a community and, consequently, promoting a systematic academic dialogue based on the pooled use of available resources.
